Who is Francois Fourie? A Journey Through the Wild

If you've ever wondered what it's like to live and breathe the African wilderness, let me introduce myself—I’m Francois Fourie, a professional field guide, wildlife photographer, and the founder of Francois Fourie Safaris. With 15 years of experience roaming some of Africa’s most incredible landscapes and reserves, and spent years working for some of the best Safari companies on the continent including Singita and MORE Family Collection, I’ve built my career around storytelling—whether through guiding, capturing moments behind the lens, or producing safari-inspired content for lodges and conservation brands.

But let’s rewind a little. My journey didn’t start in a safari vehicle with a camera in hand. It began with a deep love for nature and an insatiable curiosity about the wild. Growing up, I was the kid who loved the outdoors, from spending time in the bush with my dad and friends to watching NatGeo on Sunday afternoon at 18:00 sharp. Finally when the time was right I stepped into the bush professionally, and I knew I had found my calling.

The Evolution of a Field Guide

My career as a professional field guide took root in some of Southern Africa’s most renowned reserves, where I spent countless hours tracking big cats, leading guests on game drives, and interpreting the intricate stories nature tells every day. Field guiding isn’t just about knowing and understanding wildlife; it’s about creating unforgettable experiences—helping someone see their first leopard in the wild, feeling the rumble of an approaching elephant, or explaining how every species, from the smallest dung beetle to the towering giraffe, plays a crucial role in the ecosystem.

Guiding has shaped me in ways I never expected. It’s taught me patience (especially when waiting for a lion to yawn for the perfect shot), adaptability (because the bush never follows a script), and the art of reading people as well as I read animal tracks. Every guest is different, every drive unique, and that’s what makes this profession so addictive. My journey has also taken a turn in the ability to be able to give back some of the knowledge I have learnt to younger guides, I have been fortunate enough to be an assessor for FGASA ( Field Guides Association of Southern Africa ) and in this train guides and hopefully impart some "wisdom" onto them in the same way I was fortunate to have been trained by some of the best in the industry, in later years I was fortunate to be on the Standards Board for Guides with MORE Family Collection and was some of my fondest memories was made with these guiding teams.

Wildlife Photography: Capturing Africa’s Soul

As a wildlife photographer, my mission is to freeze moments in time—to translate the raw beauty, drama, and emotion of the African wilderness into images that inspire. Whether it’s the piercing gaze and eye contact of a lion at dawn or the golden hues of an elephant dust bath at sunset, photography allows me to tell stories that words sometimes can’t.

It’s a game of patience and timing. You might sit for hours waiting for a leopard to descend from a tree, only to have the perfect shot happen in a split second. But that’s the magic of it—the unpredictability, the chase, the reward of capturing something truly wild and unscripted. My work has taken me to some of the most incredible landscapes and eco systems, and each environment offers a new challenge and a new perspective.

Beyond the Lens: Safari Productions and Storytelling

Photography and guiding naturally evolved into something bigger—wildlife storytelling on a broader scale. Through Francois Fourie Safaris, I not only lead specialized photographic safaris but also create content for lodges, conservation projects, and safari brands. My productions range from high-end lodge marketing videos to social media reels that bring the safari experience to life in just a few seconds.

The goal? To transport people to the heart of Africa, whether they’re planning their dream safari or simply looking for a daily dose of wilderness inspiration.

What Drives Me?

At the core of everything I do is my family, my amazing wife and two boys drive me to better man, better husband and this ultimately pushes me to be better at what I love doing. Conservation is a key element in my work not just as a passive observer, but as someone who actively promotes sustainable tourism and awareness. The more people connect with wildlife, the more they care about protecting it.

I believe safari isn’t just about ticking animals off a list; it’s about moments. The quiet before a lion’s roar. The electric thrill of tracking an animal on foot. The simple joy of a sundowner overlooking an endless savanna. My goal is to help people experience these moments in a way that is immersive, unforgettable, and ultimately, life-changing.
