When ever our family starts talking about going on safari, we dream of wide-open plains, thrilling game drives, and precious time together under the African sky. But somewhere in the back of my mind, I also worried about logistics, safety, and how our children would handle the bush. Our stay at Morukuru Family, Owner’s House, in Madikwe Game Reserve turned out to be everything we hoped for.
Why Madikwe? Why Morukuru?
Madikwe is a gem in South Africa’s North West Province a malaria-free reserve, making it ideal for families. Morukuru Family is comprised of three exclusive-use houses, Owner’s House, River House, and Farm House, each with private staff, vehicles, and total privacy. We stayed in the Owner’s House, which was designed as a private family (or couple’s) retreat.

Arrival & First Impressions: Home from Home
From the moment we arrived, we could tell that Morukuru had thought of everything. The staff welcomed us like old friends. There was a warm, familial energy. The house itself felt like a luxurious family home rather than a hotel, two beautifully appointed en-suite bedrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, private balconies, and a deck under the leafy canopy of a massive Morukuru (Tamboti) tree.

The central living area is open and elegant, with a library, a dining area, a fully stocked wine cellar, and a cozy lounge with a fireplace could feel the heart of a family home in every corner, but with luxury.
One of the things that really stood out was the staff who were dedicated to us. Our guide, tracker, hostess, butler, chef, and housekeepers were all there to make the stay seamless. They even offered a nanny service for our kids, which gave us parents some precious downtime.
Family First: Thoughtful Touches for the Little Ones

As we unpacked, the kids excitedly discovered their Morukuru Kidz Backpacks, special little packs designed just for children staying at Morukuru. Inside were treasures to keep them busy and curious it showed that Morukuru really understands what it means to travel with kids in the bush.
Throughout our stay, the staff were always on hand not just to help with logistics, but to genuinely engage with the kids, whether it was helping them settle after a drive or asking if they needed anything. That kind of attentive, caring service made all the difference.
The Game Drives: Wildlife, Wonder & Unforgettable Moments
Our private game drives were some of the highlights of the trip. Because we had our own guide, tracker, and vehicle, we felt like true explorers not just guests.
Some of the standout moments:
- Elephants everywhere: It felt like they were greeting us, strolling in their majestic, gentle way across the plains.
- On our first afternoon, we were surprised (in the best kind of way) when two male lions crashed our sundowners — not a bad way to toast to the start of our safari!
- The next morning, we went looking for cheetah and were thrilled to spot two male cheetahs in the central part of the reserve.
- For breakfast on one day, Morukuru surprised us with a beautiful bush breakfast, laid out overlooking a watering hole — the kind of scene you daydream about.
- And on our final morning: sheer magic. We watched a pack of wild dogs in action, just after they had made a kill — and nearby, a brown and spotted hyena were part of a crazy, wild moment only nature can script.

Family Activities: More than Just Game Drives
Morukuru doesn’t just cater to wildlife lovers they truly understand family needs. One morning, we tried spoor casting with the kids. Their backpacks (yes, those same Kidz Backpacks) were filled with fun supplies, from little notepads to a track ID book. They were occupied, engaged, and thrilled to learn about the tracks, scents, and sounds around us.
There was also time for relaxing by our private infinity pool, for al-fresco meals on the deck, and for just being together under the sky. The house’s design blending wood, stone, and glass made it feel like an extension of nature itself.

Reflections & Take-Home Thoughts
- Safety and peace of mind: Staying in a malaria-free reserve was huge for us. No medicine stress, just pure enjoyment.
- Exclusive, personal experience: Having a whole house to ourselves, with dedicated staff and our own safari vehicle gave us freedom and privacy that’s rare on safari.
- Family-focused luxury: Morukuru clearly built their concept around family. The thoughtful touches for kids, the flexible schedule, and the personal attention made this more than a holiday, it was a shared adventure.
