There is something truly special about experiencing East Africa through a privately guided safari. It is not simply about moving between destinations or ticking wildlife sightings off a list. Earlier this year, I had the privilege of hosting and privately guiding a wonderful family from the United States on an unforgettable East African safari through Kenya and Tanzania in collaboration with Tanda Afrika. My role throughout the journey was not only to guide them through each destination and experience, but also to document their adventure through photography, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the safari while preserving the memories along the way.
Samburu – Wild, Remote and Untamed
Our safari began in the rugged landscapes of northern Kenya, where we spent four unforgettable nights at Sasaab.
Few places in Africa feel as raw and untouched as Samburu. The landscapes are dramatic and ancient, with dry riverbeds, rocky hills, and golden light creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in East Africa.
During our time there, we experienced exceptional game viewing and encountered the famous Samburu Five, species unique to the region including the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, Gerenuk, and Beisa oryx.
One of the most extraordinary experiences was taking to the skies by helicopter over northern Kenya. Flying low over vast valleys and remote wilderness areas felt almost like travelling across another planet entirely. It revealed just how wild and remote this part of Africa truly is.
Beyond the wildlife, Samburu also delivered incredible cultural experiences. From camel rides through the wilderness to time spent learning about Samburu traditions and local communities, this part of the safari offered a deeper connection to the people and landscapes of northern Kenya.
The Masai Mara – Endless Plains and Iconic Wildlife
From Samburu, we travelled south into the legendary Masai Mara, staying at the beautiful Sanctuary Olonana in the Mara Triangle.
The Masai Mara delivered the classic East African safari experience in every sense. Vast open plains stretched endlessly toward the horizon while wildlife moved across the landscape in extraordinary numbers.
Our game drives brought unforgettable sightings, from lions climbing trees to enormous herds of buffalo and elephants spread across the grasslands. Every drive felt unique, with incredible photographic opportunities around every corner.
One of the defining highlights of our time in the Mara was an early morning hot air balloon safari. Floating silently above the plains as the sun rose over the Mara, it was an experience difficult to put into words. Seeing wildlife moving below while the golden morning light illuminated the landscape was truly unforgettable.
After landing, we enjoyed a beautiful bush breakfast out on the plains before continuing our safari adventures. The team at Sanctuary Olonana also created an incredible private lunch experience out in the wilderness, adding another memorable moment to an already extraordinary stay.
Mwiba – Untamed Tanzania During Calving Season
From Kenya, our journey continued south into Tanzania, where we spent three nights at the remarkable Mwiba Lodge, part of Legendary Expeditions.
Located in the southwestern Serengeti near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Mwiba is one of the most spectacularly positioned lodges in East Africa, built seamlessly into towering granite rocky outcrops overlooking endless wilderness.
From the moment we arrived, the experience was unforgettable. Lions roared close to camp during the evenings, while dramatic sunsets painted the Serengeti in deep shades of gold and orange.
One of the most memorable moments came during a sunset drinks stop on the rocky outcrops overlooking the plains on our final evening. Surrounded by untouched wilderness and the sounds of Africa coming alive after sunset, it perfectly captured the magic of Tanzania.
The game viewing throughout our stay was exceptional. March is calving season within the southern Serengeti ecosystem, bringing massive concentrations of wildebeest herds and intense predator activity.
We spent time witnessing thousands of wildebeest spread across the plains while predators took advantage of the abundance around them. Hyenas hunted vulnerable calves, lionesses moved through the herds with cubs nearby, and every game drive felt dynamic and alive with activity.
Mwiba offered the perfect combination of luxury, exclusivity, and authentic wilderness, creating one of the true highlights of the entire safari.
Nairobi – Conservation, Reflection and Final Memories
For the final chapter of the safari, we returned to Kenya and spent two nights at the iconic Giraffe Manor.
Known worldwide for its close interactions with endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, also known as the Nubian giraffe, Giraffe Manor offered a truly unique and unforgettable experience for the family. From feeding giraffes through the windows during breakfast to spending quiet moments photographing them around the property, it became one of the most personal experiences of the journey.
Beyond the incredible guest experience, the conservation work connected to protecting and preserving these endangered giraffes added an important layer of meaning to our stay.
During our time in Nairobi, we also explored the city and enjoyed a relaxed shopping experience where the family could take home handcrafted gifts and memories from East Africa.
One of the most impactful visits was spending time at the renowned Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an organization doing extraordinary work rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned elephants and rhinos across Africa.
Witnessing the dedication and conservation efforts happening behind the scenes added another meaningful dimension to the safari, reminding us how important wildlife conservation remains across the continent.
