There’s something about Marataba that always pulls me back. I’ve just returned from four days in this incredible reserve, and while the lodge and luxury tents are as stunning as ever that quiet comfort with the bush just outside your canvas walls what really struck me this time was the game viewing.
From the moment we set out, the sightings came thick and fast: lions, elephants feeding in the riverbeds, herds of buffalo pushing dust into the air. Rhinos, too, solid and calm as they always are. But it was the leopards that defined this trip for me. Sightings of them here have grown stronger at Marataba, and watching these elusive cats on Safari here was really special.
The Miss Mara Experience
One of the highlights of any stay at Marataba is the Miss Mara water safari and this time, it delivered beyond all expectations. We set out in the late afternoon, the river glowing under the golden light of sunset, sundowners in hand. From the boat, there’s always something to see: abundant birdlife perfect for photography, pods of hippos grunting and splashing, and the peaceful rhythm of the water carrying you deeper into the reserve.
This trip, however, was extraordinary. In what was perhaps my best Miss Mara experience ever, we saw four out of the Big Five from the boat. It began with an adult male lion accompanied by three younger males, an awe-inspiring sight to witness from the water. Not long after, we spotted a lone buffalo bull, followed by four rhino grazing in the distance. Then, the moment that made the afternoon truly unforgettable our guide, Kim, spotted a leopardess grooming herself on the riverbank. We drifted closer, quietly, without disturbing her, and watched in complete awe.
Photography Heaven
For anyone who loves photography, this place is a dream. Every drive, every bend in the river, offers something. My camera barely had a chance to rest — golden light, dust clouds, water reflections, and the kind of close encounters that stay with you long after you’ve packed up your gear.
Marataba isn’t just a safari lodge. It’s a reminder of why we go into the bush in the first place: to feel small in the presence of wild things, to see the unexpected, and to come home carrying stories worth telling.
